Hygrocybe laeta (Pers. ex Fr.) Kummer syn. Hygrophorus laetus (Pers. ex Fr.) Fr. syn. Hygrophorus houghtonii Berk. & Br. Zäher Saftling Heath Waxcap. Cap 1–3cm across, convex, flesh to pale tawny-brown, slimy, faintly lined at the margin. Stem 30–70 x 2–4mm, pale yellow tinged with cap colour, very slimy. Flesh thin, tawny in the cap, more yellowish in the stem which soon becomes hollow. Taste and smell not distinctive. Gills decurrent, widely spaced but connected by veins, whitish to flesh-coloured. Spore print white. Spores broadly ellipsoid, 5–7.5 x 4–5um. Habitat on heaths usually amongst bracken. Season late autumn. Uncommon. Edible (Never eat any mushroom until you are certain it is edible as many are poisonous and some are deadly poisonous.) Distribution, America and Europe. Note the American (blue background) show differences with the European specimens and possibly need reconsidering. |
